The SurrealistI lose myself within shadows:
the looming, lanky shapes of skyscrapers that veil busy streets and intersections—
the clouds in the sky reflected on pavement like the artwork of a lonely artist,
and even in my own shadow, which hides sometimes when the sun, too, loses itself behind a darkened silhouette.

I lose myself within the ripples upon the water, transfixed by the ease in which rocks skip off its slippery surface.
It reminds me briefly of a beach in Washington, whose massive waves engulfed every rock
I dare let fly, my effort consumed in salt and foam.
I would spend hours washing sand from toes, and wrestling salt from hair

as the beloved is everywhere

but something refuses to leave me

like obsessive music, forsaken song

language is a terrible thing

when they ask me for words

and grief is long past due.

I invoke your image into existence,

That Rat Bastard Reginald SmittyReginald Smitty is the craftiest son-of-a-bitch I've ever known,
that's for damn sure.
You see, I was supposed to go to the neighborhood Valentine's Dance
with Sadie Anderson, that ample broad from down the street,
but that rat bastard Reginald,
well,
he snatched her right out from under me, pulled the rug out,
he did! And so I says to the guy, I says,
"Look here, guy, that's my lady you're taking to the Dance,"
(all polite-like, 'cause I'm just that kind of person, see)
and he turns to me and laughs! He laughs in my face!

It's a strange thing.

Sometimes,
Loving someone,
Makes you do things,
You really don't want to.

Sometimes,
Loving someone,
Requires,
Letting them go.

Even when your heart,
Desperately clings to them.

I had a love,
It wasn't everything I dreamed,
It wasn't everything I wanted,
But I had it.

But sometimes,
What we think we have,
And what we should have,
Are polar opposites.

My breaking heart screams at me,

I know I did what was needed,

Lost Spirit

She is in this world, but she isn't.
She isn't happy and she is lost.
She has been hurt many times, now when a new man comes along she asks,
"what is the cost?" She couldn't deal with the pain,
so she threw her heart away and it became like frost.

One day she will be happy and the next she will feel incomplete.
Every time someone hurts her there's one less beat.
She so sad that it drives her crazy.
There's no one who can help her so she writes it all on a sheet.
She doesn't want to get hurt again; she wishes she was made out of concrete.

There is something missing, but she doesn't know.
She has a body, but she can't feel.

World So ColdI used to think that I had friends
People who wanted me for me
But none of them really pursued
And so I'm still a mystery

This is a fact that breaks my spirit
I'm so tired of being alone
These people don't seem to get it
Which is why I'm usually on my own

Why does nobody desire my heart
Inside I've got so much to share
Living in this world tears me apart
Most people are too blind to care

The ones I love don't know me too well
Nobody attempts to look inside
This world so cold has become my hell
I've prayed to God telling him I've tried

All I really want is to just be had
By people who love my heart and soul
To not have these

Through Open EyesPerceive the world through open eyes,
Watch it closely as it twists and turns,
Remember you're missing things,
Keep that in mind as the fire burns,
Sometimes your world won't make sense,
Like bloody hands cradling innocence.

You want to influence what your eyes see,
Without knowing what's going on,
But if you take too long learning things,
Your one shot might be dead and gone,
Be careful opening doors,
Act like somebody has opened yours.

Be careful respecting the unknown,
As life will give birth to mysteries,
If you're too cautious all the time,
You may miss out on your fantasies,

Life Of EvilThe darkness is consuming me
The light from my eyes fading
There is nothing I can do about it

Reaching OutAs individuals we only see so much
We don't miss things because we're blind
It's so hard to pick up everything
There is no way to read a mind

This is why people must reach out
The best of senses aren't automatic
I've got people I'd love to help
When they remain silent it's problematic

You can only question people so much
Before they begin to shut the door
Once they shut down they are hard to hear
Just like a heart beneath the floor

Sometimes you need to push harder
Other times it's best to let them be
Perhaps they'll come to you in time
All you can do is wait and see

Those who are in need have got to ask
Otherwise nobody can

Same Old TripI've been walking down the same old road
The stumbling block gets in the way
But this routine isn't something new
It's just a little game I play

This fact is something I embrace
I'm all dressed up in my dirty clothes

Soul Mate

As I dance alone in the midnight air
I think of you and know you're there
and as I smile and close my eyes
I know you'll take me by surprise

My skin you touch with gentle slow
and set my spirit all aglow
I shiver and whirl then faintly glide
to the eternal warmth at your side

You lift my hand and plant a kiss
then gaze in my eyes so that I'll not miss
the words you'll speak
that'll cause my heart bliss

I feel drawn to you, I see you feel the same pull
it seems that some things we may never know
no matter how badly we wish them to show

But there are some lucky enough to find
the person who within
their soul mate resides.

A famous Persian or Indian poet said something about the soul mate--ie, he/she is the mate of the soul, assuming that the soul has a gender.
